The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
