Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, fiends, and sinister influences growing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

Per the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented narrative style where peaceful solutions are rare.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might look unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the secret base, striking the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and warns that it is a nasty location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the team enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that control the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This results in them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s follow-up content, we find out that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers tables.

Fans can expect discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
