Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
